Why Pet Insurance?

There are well over 100 million cats and dogs in the U.S., with more than 60% of all U.S. households owning a cat or a dog. In addition, some 5 million households own one or more birds.

This shows clearly that Americans are fond of pets, an observation that is confirmed by the fact that most pet owners (over 90%) take their pets to the veterinarian for preventive care and vaccinations on a more or less regular basis.

Unfortunately, the cost of veterinary pet care has risen dramatically (just like like the cost of human health care!), and as a result, many pet owners have been unable to give their cat or dog the medical care it deserves; often, they have been forced into “economic euthanasia”…

It is almost a given that cats or dogs will get ill at some point during their lifes. Nowadays, however, veterinarians are able to provide a wide range of services (such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation) that can prolong and greatly improve the quality of a pet’s life.

When your beloved pet gets ill, you have more than enough on your mind –you should not have to worry about the medical expenses involved as well, and you certainly should not have to ask yourself if you can financially afford to save the life of your pet!

Pet Health Insurance Coverage

That is where pet insurance comes in. If you have had the foresight to get good pet health insurance, you will be able to concentrate on your pet’s illness instead of the costs involved. Not all pet insurance plans are created equal, however, so it is important to make sure you get the right pet insurance!

In particular, make sure that you know what is and is not covered –the coverage of a pet health insurance should obviously include the more expensive treatments that are frequently prescribed! Also look at any deductibles and upper limits on coverage. See if you can use any veterinarian or just a select group, and if you need pre-authorization –these questions are particularly important in case of emergencies! Finally, you may want to check if preventative and routine care are covered as well.

It is a good idea to get pet insurance quotes from a number of insurers, then compare not only the costs but also the benefits of the insurance being offered. Getting the right pet insurance can truly help you give your pet the medical care it deserves!
